What is an Email Client?

An email client is a software application that enables user to receive and send emails directly on their desktop. It typically requires an active email address to be setup and configured before user can start using email service. Configuration and settings generally include email address, password, POP/IMAP and SMTP address, port numbers, and other related preferences. Examples for email clients are Microsoft Outlook, Thunderbird, Mac Mail, Windows Live, etc.
